During September 2008, I posted a note about Education with Dignity. Last week, I was happy to receive a note from our partner in this effort in Rajahmundry (Rotary Club of Rivercity) that the project has been completed.

A note which like below, made our day and I immediately shared with everyone who provided support.

our toilet project successfully completed and dedicated to the students of Luther High school  on 30-05-09 in the presence of M.P. Vundavalli Arunakumar, M.L.A. Routhu Surayaprakasha & M.L.C. Kandula Durgash and convined a public meeting, they appreciated the project and recognised the funding  of  Team India and rotary.

I am hoping we will be able to continue similar work in future.

Field Trip experience

My daughter has been going to some field trips through school in last few years. Field trips provide a first hand experience and practical knowledge. I have not accompanied her on any of the trips due to work commitments. Recently I could take a break from work and accompany her on a field trip.

It seemed to happen so quickly though I didn’t have a plan to go on this one. With only 2 days to go, I looked closely at the field trip flyer. Then I realized that I am familiar with the place they are going to. Marine Science Institute in Redwood City is located next to Informatica office where I worked for few years. When working there, I have watched numerous times when kids arrived there and was curious what they did there. I never imagined that I will be there one day. Once I knew where the trip is going to be, I casually mentioned to my daughter that if the teacher still wants an extra chaparone, I will come.

My daughter was excited by this and immediately told her teacher next day. I got a call from her teacher that I can join the field trip. I checked the website for details of what will be there. On the day of field trip, we had to get up early 5.30 AM and be there at school by 6.30 AM. It was still dark at that time, but every child was there, ready for the experience.

Marine Science Institute is focused on education of children by providing first hand experience of marine life and explain the ecosystem to whoever is interested. All children boarded a ship that sailed on the estuary. Children were introduced to basics of the ecosystem. They were divided into four groups and took turns to do different activities: Fishing and study fishes that were caught, explore marine life under microscope, understand how to measure water temperature, density and salinity and explore bottom of the ocean by digging up the mud. Children had fun with non-stop 3 hour activity that involved thinking and physical activity.

It was a good experience. While my interest was not exactly in learning marine life, accompanying children and watching them excitedly learn new things reminded me of my schooling days. And the fact that I accompanied them was a matter of pride for my daughter and an indication that I care about her learning experience.

I do read in some blogs online where people experience regret that they have not spent enough time with their kids as they were busy with work. Time Management articles exhort that you spend time on things that you care most. I would definitely encourage parents who use the excuse not to spend time to kids to look for such opportunities. You will cherish the experience.

Continuing Education

As a follow up to a recent post “Education and Literacy”, I would like to add that every literate person would need to continue his education in following areas. Not having right knowledge, skills in following can lead to a miserable situation.

  • Personal Financial Management: Financial security is key to survival. Ability to effectively manage one’s finances to stay out of debt and saving for future.
  • Health Education: Health is wealth. It is important to realize being a responsible person in managing one’s own health: staying fit, eating right
  • Spiritual Education: Live and Let Live. Ability to live amicably in society and help maintain peace in society. (not to be confused with religion)

While these topics are not really taught in schools or colleges, learning these concepts will be important. If you don’t get enough knowledge in these areas to practice, you will learn them hard way. For example, you may get in debt early in life and then only realize importance of managing your finances. While these learning comes out practical experience, learning from elders, friends or experts (who write books to help others) is advised. Not everyone may recover quickly from lapses in these areas.

Learn best practices in these areas and implement them. Find balance in your life. Live well.

Pass on the wisdom to next generation.

Education and Literacy

Education is one key ingredient in life that makes a difference in life. I always wanted to highlight the difference between education and literacy. Typically these two are confused.

Literacy is ability to read and write. It does not make a person educated. A literate person can be uneducated person. An illiterate person can be educated person too.

Being educated means a person has ability to understand difference between right and wrong, good and bad in a given situation. An educated person attempts to understand any given situation, evaluates options available and takes a right decision in best interests of self and everyone involved.

Illiterate people can be educated based on personal experience. They can learn from their or other’s experience/wisdom and act in best interests in a situation. An educated person can make a bad decision by lack of knowledge or experience in a specific area.

In developing countries when government or non-profit organizations attempt to increase literacy rates, it should not assumed it will automatically make people educated. Instead it should be complemented by efforts to educate people irrespective of literacy rates achieved.

Education is a life long process. One should not give up learning just because they have gained a literary degree. Ability to read and write should be used to learn more and increase self awareness.

Having attempted to differentiate between literacy and education, it is important to mention that so called ‘degree holders’ should not look down upon illiterate people. This will make them educated fools.

Stay Educated by acting in best interests of everyone in all situations. Whenever I see an educated person behave in highly selfish manner, this idea crossed my mind. It can be as simple as someone littering a public place or arrogantly not following instructions when expected to.

Tips: Trends in Training

In my previous articles I have highlighted importance of training. I wanted to share some of the trends I have noticed in training and their advantages and disadvantages.

Class Room Training: Cost of Training is high when it is classroom. It also requires people to go away from their regular work and incur travel costs in some cases. But advantage of class room training is the interactive nature increases chances of learning new skills quickly.

Offline Self paced training: This is method where you can buy the CD or other material and learn at your pace. This works well when a person is highly motivated to learn. It tends to be very cheap.

Online Self paced training: Online training has also become more popular. This is almost similar to Offline Self paced training but due to technology used to deliver, this tends to be a little costly.

Online Moderated Training: This method takes best of Class Room Training and Online Training Methods. This saves travel costs and it is easier to attend if you have well structure training program. Moderator can make sure all attendees get to complete the program.

While Classroom training is the best, other methods can be selected based on advantages they offer.

Views: Avoid Piracy

Piracy of software, music etc is not good for economy. Piracy takes away money from people who deserve it for their hard work.

If you are a software developer who spent months writing a great program and someone stole it, how would you feel? Cheated? It is not about regulations against piracy that will make piracy go away, but individuals avoiding piracy that will help.

On the otherside: what makes people pirate stuff?

Convenience: when it is easier to make a copy than buying genuine version. Lack of genuine versions available easily also becomes one reason people copy.

Price: when people feel real price is not worth paying when it is available for lower price. Everyone is out to save money.

Peer Pressure: Lot of times I have seen peer pressure to copy stuff (which is convenience as well as saving money) plays a key role. It is short term thinking that makes one bite the temptation to pirate and be done with it without feeling guilty. Lot of times this happens so fast that no one pays attention anymore.

Proliferation of Pirated Stuff: There are times when one does not know whether we are buying genuine stuff or pirated stuff.

Next time you are tempted to copy software or music or DVD, realize that it is always good to spend money which will be good for the economy. If you can afford to pay the money and it fits your budget, pay for the genuine stuff. You will feel glad you did. It is not fear of legislation but making the economy better that should be motivate you to spend money.

If you own business, create budget to acquire all necessary genuine software for each employee who joins your company. By planning properly you will avoid creating an atmosphere where unlicensed software is used within your business.

Avoid piracy: It is good for you and good for the economy.

Achieving Financial Success

Being free from financial difficulties is most important step for a successful life. Every individual cannot be become an expert in managing finances. It is fine if one makes a few mistakes and learns the lessons quickly. One should not repeat the financial mistakes and get into a financial mess that cannot be fixed. Simple things to remember for gaining financial freedom are

  • Do not spend more than what you earn
  • Do not live beyond your means
  • Save for the future
  • Focus on increasing one’s earning potential

Most people get into financial problems by ignoring these two basic principles and there is lot of literature that gets to investing for future etc. In my opinion, even if one does pay attention to increasing financial success, these basic principles need to be adhered to.

Do not spend more than what you earn will involve carefully tracking what one is earning and budgeting different expenses and spending within one’s budget.

Do not live beyond your means will involve resisting temptation to go beyond what one can afford which contributes to financial debt in most situations.

Saving for the future will involve making small savings on regular basis

Focus on increasing one’s earning potential will involve investing in one’s skills and potential. No one can live with one salary for life.
